How Often Should You Detail Your Car In Ontario?

January 15, 20256 min read

Ontario weather is brutal on cars — salt, slush, sun, pollen, road grime. Here's an honest seasonal schedule from a Milton detailer.

Ontario drivers ask us this every week. The honest answer depends on how you drive, where you park, and what time of year it is — but there's a simple schedule that works for almost everyone in Milton and Halton Region.

The short answer

For most Milton drivers we recommend:

  • A full detail twice a year — once in spring (April–May) to undo winter damage, and once in fall (October) to protect the cabin and paint before the salt season starts.
  • An interior detail every 3 months between full details to keep salt, sand, food, and pet hair from grinding into your carpets.
  • An exterior maintenance wash every 2–3 weeks in winter to flush road salt off your paint and undercarriage.

Why Ontario is harder on cars than most places

Three things make Ontario uniquely tough on vehicle interiors and exteriors:

1. Road salt

From November to March, Milton and the GTA dump enormous amounts of salt and brine on the roads. Salt gets tracked into your cabin on boots, soaks into your carpets, and dries into white crusts that permanently stain fabric if left untreated. On the outside, salt eats clear coat, pits chrome, and accelerates rust.

2. Temperature swings

Ontario regularly swings 30°C in a single week. Those swings expand and contract leather, rubber seals, and paint — accelerating cracking and clear-coat failure on cars that aren't maintained.

3. Tree sap, pollen, and bird droppings

Spring and summer bring sap, pollen, and bird droppings that etch into clear coat in under 48 hours if left in the sun.

A simple year-round schedule

Spring (April–May) Book a full car detail. This is the single most important detail of the year. Winter salt needs to come out of the carpets, off the paint, and out of the wheel wells before it does permanent damage.

Summer (June–August) Book an interior detail every 2–3 months. Outside, a maintenance wash every 3–4 weeks is enough.

Fall (September–October) Book a full detail with paint protection before the first snow. A good sealant makes winter washes 3x faster all season long.

Winter (November–March) Interior detail in January or February — by then your carpets are loaded with salt. Frequent quick exterior washes (every 2–3 weeks) to keep salt off paint.

What if I have a lease?

If you're returning a leased vehicle in Ontario, a full detail in the month before turn-in almost always pays for itself in avoided wear-and-tear charges. We've had Milton customers save $400–$800 in lease-end fees by booking a $140 deep interior clean.

What if I have kids, pets, or eat in my car?

You'll want interior details every 6–8 weeks, not every 3 months. Food, drink, and pet hair break down fabric and cause permanent staining and odour faster than salt does. We see this constantly in Milton family SUVs.

The bottom line

Most Milton cars need 2 full details and 2–3 interior touch-ups per year. That's 4–5 appointments — less than $700/year — to keep your car looking new and protect its resale value.
